Collect, Organise, Represent — Make Data Speak and Scores Follow
Statistics in Class IX introduces data collection, tabulation, graphical representation (bar graph, histogram, frequency polygon), and central tendency (mean, median, mode) for ungrouped data. CBSE awards 6–8 marks; MCQs focus on reading graphs and computing mean/median/mode for small datasets. NTSE includes data interpretation. This chapter is highly visual — practise reading bar charts and histograms quickly.
Recall these cold before attempting MCQs — they appear in >70% of questions.
Mean MCQs: sum all values and divide by count — list values carefully from the frequency table. Median MCQs: always sort the data in ascending order first, then find the middle value. For even n, take the average of the n/2 and (n/2 + 1)th values. Mode is the value that appears most often — if two values tie, the data is bimodal. Histogram MCQs: the y-axis is frequency, x-axis is class intervals — bars touch each other (unlike bar graphs where bars are separated).
Work through each rung in order — do not jump to Hard before mastering Easy.
Read bar graphs and histograms, find mean of small ungrouped datasets
Find median and mode, interpret frequency polygon, build frequency table
Combined mean/median/mode from table, class mark for mean computation
CBSE — mean + graph interpretation; NTSE — data analysis and comparison
