Key Concepts

01. Crop Variety Improvement

Methods include hybridisation (crossing different varieties), introduction of new varieties, and use of genetic engineering. Goals: higher yield, improved quality, biotic/abiotic stress resistance, shorter maturity period.

02. Crop Production Management

Nutrient management: macronutrients (C, H, O, N, P, K) and micronutrients (Fe, Mn, B, Zn, etc.) are essential. Sources: manure (organic) and fertilisers (chemical). Irrigation methods: canal, well, drip, sprinkler.

03. Crop Protection Management

Pests, weeds, and diseases reduce yield. Control: preventive (crop rotation, resistant varieties), chemical (pesticides, herbicides, fungicides), biological (use of natural predators). Proper storage prevents post-harvest losses.

04. Animal Husbandry — Cattle & Poultry

Cattle farming: milch breeds (Sahiwal, Jersey), draught breeds (Ongole). Cross-breeding improves yield and disease resistance. Poultry: broilers (meat) and layers (eggs). Proper feeding and vaccination are essential.

05. Fisheries

Capture fisheries: ocean or inland water fish caught from natural habitats. Aquaculture / Mariculture: fish farming in controlled environments (pisciculture). Composite fish culture: multiple species in one pond increases yield.

06. Bee-keeping & Vermicomposting

Bee-keeping (apiculture) produces honey and wax; also aids crop pollination. Vermicomposting uses earthworms to convert organic waste to nutrient-rich compost.

# Name Expression Notes
01 Yield Factors Yield = Variety × Environment × Management Interacting factors for crop yield
02 Macronutrients N, P, K, C, H, O, S, Ca, Mg 9 macronutrients needed in large amounts
03 Micronutrients Fe, Mn, B, Zn, Cu, Mo, Cl 7 micronutrients needed in traces

Important Notes

Nitrogen (N) is crucial for leaf growth; Phosphorus (P) for root development; Potassium (K) for overall plant health (NPK rule).
Organic manure improves soil texture and water retention; chemical fertilisers provide concentrated nutrients but can cause soil degradation.
Crop rotation with legumes (which fix nitrogen) helps restore soil nitrogen levels naturally.
Mixed farming — combining crop cultivation with animal husbandry — is more sustainable and economically stable.

Exam Tips & Common Mistakes

1

Distinguish manure (organic, improves soil, slow release) vs fertiliser (chemical, fast release, can cause pollution).

2

Name two milch breeds and two draught breeds of cattle — one-mark recall question. (Milch: Sahiwal, Gir; Draught: Ongole, Hariana.)

3

Composite fish culture: name the 6 fish species — Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Silver carp, Common carp, Grass carp. Examiners ask for 2–3.

4

Drip irrigation conserves water by delivering it directly to roots — explain in 2 sentences for a 2-mark answer.

5

This chapter is memory-heavy; create flashcards for breeds, crops, irrigation types, and pest control methods.
